It’s
Got To be Perfect
“They
say that nobody is perfect. Then they tell you practice makes perfect. I
wish they'd make up their minds.” Winston Churchill
The search for perfection is like the historical search
for the Holy Grail. Nobody really knows what it is and the search is
never ending. Some people have been fooled into thinking they have got
it and despite all of this, there is still the question, does it really
exist anyway?
Like The Holy Grail, perfection is an enigma. It is a
well performed magic trick that has the audiences captivated and always
yearning for how the trick is really done. Unfortunately, this is one
trick nobody will find the fabrication of, because it is an illusionary
trick.
For some people, everything in their life has to be
perfect, or whatever they think (or more likely told to think), is
perfect. Because some people make the goal of perfection the B all and
end all of their time on planet earth they end up living a life of never
ending dissatisfaction.
We are bombarded 24/7 from all directions and from many
sources of what is perfect and what it is to be perfect. Everything has
to be perfect from our bodies to our homes to even our fruit and
vegetables in the supermarkets!
The media is the most influential culprit of the
perfection propaganda that we are subjected to on a secondly basis,
nevermind an hourly or daily basis! The media dictates to us what is
perfect, then tells us to go get it, or rather go buy it, as perfection
has never been free! It is a multi-squillion pounds industry! As far
as the media is concerned we are never good looking enough, rich enough,
happy enough, thin enough, sophisticated enough, smart enough and
getting enough (as in sex ;0) ). Our houses are never refurbished
enough, our partners are never hot enough, our jobs are never
prestigious enough, our holidays are never luxurious enough, our clothes
are never designer label cool enough, our cars are never up-to-date
enough, our pets are not preened enough, our kids are not hitting A
grades or doing extra activities enough, yar de yar de yar, the list
runs a long as the Nile!
People who have adopted the perfection propaganda and
made it their life mission are forever in the insecure position of
keeping up with the illusion. Pursuing perfection inevitably sends
people potty because the goal post of perfection changes all the time.
You never know where you are.
One minute the perfect car looks like so, the next minute
it looks like a more expensive version. The once perfect area to live
is now on this year’s has been list. Last season big plastic boobies
are in, now they are not. How are you going to aim in the right place,
score and win the game of perfection, when the goal posts keep
shifting? I’ll tell you how, by choosing your own aim and placing the
goals where you want them to be. You are the games master of your life
and the decider of what is perfect for you.
I meet people everyday living unhappy lives because they
are trying to keep up with other people’s standards of perfection,
whether it is perfection standards by the media, peer groups, parents,
family, partners or employers.
Even if something was actually perfect, it wouldn’t be
perfect for long because sooner or later something else will come along
that is seen to be more perfect and the previous perfect object or
situation is obsolete. So all the people in the world chasing
perfection are going to have to get some hard wearing Nikes! There are
only instances of perfection, so investing so much time and energy in
perfection as if it was a permanent state is ridiculous.
Like beauty, perfection is in the eye of the beholder.
The more evolved person will know that imperfection is
perfection. For example, when kids make those whacky looking objects at
school in crafts class, like a mug for instance. It looks busted! Its
wonky, the handle is too small, the picture painted on the mug is
unrecognisable and they’ve spelt mum or dad wrong. lol But you know
that this is without a doubt the most perfect mug you have ever had!
And whatever you use it for, because it could be so bad it doesn’t even
function as a mug, it will have pride of place in your home or at your
office.
You may be living a life that outside influences tell you
is NOT perfect or good enough, but actually for you it is and you are
happy, so therefore, it is perfect. Or you may be living the life that
outside influences tell you IS perfect and in spite of all your
perfectness, you can’t remember the last time you were truly and
sincerely happy, therefore I would would say the reality is it isn’t
perfect.
If you want to be happy and enjoy your life more, you
have to stop participating in the pressure to be perfect. You have to
start to appreciate the imperfections in life.
So the next time you pass a manky looking vegetable in
the supermarket, don’t turn your nose up at it. Bless it and smile that
is is here as a food source to nourish your body and buy it for your
next meal.
If you meet somebody with crooked teeth, don’t looked
turned off and offer them the number of a good dentist. They may not
have perfect teeth but how important is that and how does this make the
person less worthy to get to know than somebody with a Hollywood smile?
If you are invited to somebody’s house who isn’t living
in a top area, or has a house that looks like it comes out of a
lifestyle magazine, except the invitation..you may just have the perfect
evening!
Imperfection is not a dirty word or a bad state to be in,
it’s just who we all are. The imperfectionists of life!
