Make Your Own Tarot Deck with ordinary Playing Cards

Thanks to a question by Amanda on displaying the cards to enable everyone to make their own, here you go!  It always pays to ask ;-)

I have deliberately left out the interpretations that appear on this site, because these are truly visual cards (yes even without pictures) and when you do these for yourself (or friends) at home, you need to be aware of the cards themselves and where they fall, which cards they are between, how they interact with the other cards, sometimes the story is very clear, other times you need to take in the entire picture to build the finished product.  What I am saying is that you should be focused on the cards, the meanings will come to you as you learn from the cards.  Of course, decks do not come with a 1 so you will need to substitute the Ace in.

I'd really love some feedback from anyone that decides to make their own packs :-)

It certainly brings back memories looking at all the cards like this.  I remember scanning them in and using some old archaic (remember it was 1999) piece of software to resize and save them, I'm sorry they are so big (in file size), I will ad it to my "to do list" and re scan them and make them smaller... soon.  Jen

here's where you go to do a reading!

Step 1.  Find yourself a deck of playing cards (new is good, but not necessary), contrary to popular belief they can have been handled before (otherwise tarot readers would never let you touch their cards).  Or... feel free to print this page out and truly make the cards from scratch - although you'd need some good sturdy paper!

Step 2.  Find some quite time to sit down with the cards and write on the front of each card the defined meaning. If you feel so inclined ad in some of your own artwork, be that images that come to mind on each card or even just some borders.

Step 3.  Cleanse your cards.  This will depend on what you "feel" you would like to do.  Cleansing a crystal can be done in Moonlight or water or simply in the earth, doing this with the cards will make them a little hard to work with after!  I would suggest placing them in a special place - somewhere important to you, perhaps a box or an old trunk, if you have a cleansed crystal you can keep the crystal with the cards, however this is a necessity.

Readings

Remember these cards have been handed down to me from my grandfather who was given them when he was young and they are (he was told) from a Gypsy woman who gave them to him, to give to someone who would share them the world over...  I think that's pretty amazing, all that time ago in Australia... and you won't find anything like these cards anywhere else - it's a lovely story.  So now to the reading.

1) Find a court card to represent yourself (or the person for whom you'd like to read)

2) Insert into the pack and shuffle

3) Deal all the cards out face up (on the floor is a good place!) 9 to a row.

4) Find the court card that represents the reader... now follow closely.

5) Including that card (ie count it as 1) count to the right and remove the 9th card, return to your court card, again counting it as 1 and count out another 9 cards (skipping the first ones you just counted) again removing the 9th card, do this 7 times, each time removing a card and adding it to your pile. Once you have done your forward passes through the deck, again return to your deck, find your court card and this time count backwards (ie right to left) repeat this process finding another seven cards.  When you have finished you will in fact have 14 cards that make up your reading.

On the site, the cards are displayed vertically down the screen (this is just due to the limitation applied by the site), however I lay them horizontally along the floor - it makes more sense to me that way.  And that's it!

Of course remember that you will get a clearer reading, by going through a meditation before hand or being calmed and relaxed... I guess what I'm saying is don't rush out on a Saturday night and do a reading two minutes before you've got to fly out the door!  If you have any questions concerning this process, please drop by the forum and post a question, there's plenty of folks there who've been using these cards for a long time and will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.  Oh you may even pick up a new layout or two... or share one?!
